Does It Play On a Mac? – The Neverhood

In contrast to all the dark, bloody games I’ve covered previously, this installment attempts a bright, quirky, all-clay animated point-and-click adventure game from 1996. Can the Mac handle the over three tons of clay it took to create The Neverhood?

I’ve recently tried running Neverhood on my Mac using Crossover Games, and mostly it works. But all the video runs at half speed and I’m unable to get it to run in Window mode. Now from the video above, you’ve got both of those things working, any hints on how i would get it working?

First of all, please understand that I’m not the most technical guy in the world. I”m just a graphic-designer-gamer who’s fooling around trying to get these old games working on the Mac. I won’t be able to give you very detailed answers to your questions, especially since I don’t know what Mac you have or what you’re running on it.

Having said that I can offer these suggestions:

    1. The Neverhood’s graphics are not the same as the monitor’s resolution, but merely stretched to fit your monitor when it runs. If you take a look at the Carmageddon II video, you’ll see that I set up Crossover Games to emulate a desktop in a window. This is in case something goes wrong and I don’t get stuck on an app in full screen. The other side of that is that programs show up in their actual resolution in the window, and don’t take up the whole screen.

    2. As far as the video speed, the only things I would try is make an image of the disc (Mac’s built-in Disk Utility can handle this) mount the .dmg file and install and run from that. The speed of accessing a virtual disc rather than an actual physical drive might help.

Again, I’m not the most technical guy on the planet, so your results may vary. Thanks for watching the videos.

How do you get CrossOver to emulate a desktop in a window!? I followed all the other instructions and it opens with little problem but I still would not want to be trapped in the game. Any adivce?

How did you set crossover games to emulate in a window? I can’t find the option.

I have successfully loaded the game in crossover, however, during the first person scenes and the cutscenes the game lags about half time and the cutscenes barely play. Everything else runs good. How do I make the game run in a smaller window and not in full screen? Will that help crossover emulate the game? Or is it just a configuration issue. Ive ran the game from an Image and from a disc. Same results. FYI, I am running a macbook pro that is about 2 months old. So im guessing it should have the power to run this. Any ideas??
    Thanks!

    Hi,
if someone find a solution for the half-speed video problem please let me know. I have been trying everything for hours and nothing helps.
I hope someone comes up with a solution

    Thanks in advance

Working great for me! Installed it using the Win98 bottle and for those that want it in a window, you need to change the configuration settings for the Win98 bottle so that the video runs in a virtual desktop window … I have mine set to 1024×768 for the games that need it but Neverhood automatically resized the window to fit the resolution it wanted.

    Hope this helps!

Ps … if anyone has Apple Panic I’ve been searching everywhere for this ancient game … any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Vishal (or anyone else reading this) I’ve been trying to run Neverhood, and I’m getting the same issues with the video that everyone else has been getting. I followed your advice, but I’m still getting a serious slowdown. What kind of a mac are you running? Could you post/tell us what your other settings are for your bottle?

  9. Mitch says:

Has anyone figured out the issues with the video lag?

  10. Stephen says:

Why dont u try (instead of crossover) running it on bootcamp
I had slow speed issues playing games with crossover and running via bootcamp it worked fine
